T'is "some shockin' good!"...as we say here in Newfoundland.
In fact the man who wrote that Newfoundland classic song "Some Shockin' Good!" can now add another piece of fame to his writing abilities. Lloyd Candow, retired business man, octogenarian, entrepreneur, inventor, avid reader and just a wonderful man to meet and chat with, has just published his debut book entitled "Some Shockin' Good Smiles - For Seniors". As well, Mr Candow has just published his 108th piece of humorous writing in Canada's national newspaper The Globe and Mail! (Other than perhaps Rex Murphy, I can't think of any other Newfoundlander with so many submissions. Can you?)
At age 82 years young, Lloyd has produced a book of humour that is, witty, clever, intelligent, captivating and sometimes even a bit risque. When I asked him about the risque stuff he said, "Hey! ... Who said a young pup like you can read it? ... it's for seniors!"
In fact the book is in large print and has a spine seniors will love. It stays open where ever you leave it and every one of the 142 pages has humour that is as fresh as Newfoundland hung laundry blowing on a grassy knob out the Cove.
For example: "What did Whistler say when he found his mother scrubbing the floor?" - "Mother, are you off your rocker?"
Or how about this gem: "When I was young we were so poor we used to go to KFC and lick other peoples' fingers."
Lloyd says all he wants is for his readers to smile and chuckle every time they open his book. In fact he is hoping that www.nfinteractive.com will start up a monthly section of about ten of his SMILES that he would like to call "Happy as a clam." That expression is on the cover of his book beneath a clam smiling a happy look on its face. Lloyd says he hopes his book is like the recent book he is reading about anti gravity. He says ... "I have just started reading a book about anti-gravity and guess what? I can't put it down."
Loyd Candow is a born and bred Newfoundlander who is originally from just outside of Curling, on the west coast of Newfoundland. He makes his retirement home in Pasadena and lives with his real stuffed polar bear, his very active computer, and his CBC radio. Feel free to contact him to request his book by emailing him at hapneau@gmail.com. All letters will be responded to with one finger pecking. Don't laugh...the entire manuscript was printed that way over one full year!
